In addition, hormone testing, heavy metal profiles, laboratory (blood) analysis, diagnostics for nutritional deficiencies/excesses, physical examinations, and thermography may be suggested as part of a complete patient work-up.
A full dispensary of nutritional supplements, Chinese herbs, and botanical tinctures are available for patient convenience.
Prescriptive Authority – Naturopathic doctors are licensed to prescribe medications in B.C. This improves primary care options for patients, eases the burden on our health system, and reduces waiting times. Most importantly, it increases patient choice in the health care that can be provided to them. Naturopathic physicians still continue to treat patients using the same natural therapies they have always used, however this new regulation enhances treatment options to best suit the patient.
Clinical Nutrition
Even in Canada, a nation of virtually unlimited resources of affordable food, poor health is often the result of bad nutrition.
Proper nutrition is the foundation for preventing and treating many health conditions, and ensuring lifelong wellness. Many diseases can be caused by nutritional deficiencies/excesses, food sensitivities and allergies. By examining the relationship between diet and health, we can make recommendations based on the patient’s health concerns and ultimate goals. Vitamins, minerals, and other nutraceuticals may be prescribed to supplement the diet, and assist the patient in healing.
Botanical Medicine
About 40% of modern pharmaceuticals were derived originally from wild plants. Although most are now synthesized, Naturopathic Doctors have retained the connection to nature, drawing on the medicinal properties of more than 300 plant species in their practice.
Chinese Medicine
Developed over more than 3000 years ago, the traditional eastern use of herbs, diet and acupuncture is now recognized in the west as a sophisticated and effective branch of medical practice.
Acupuncture follows the belief that energy or Qi flows naturally through the body. When there is disease or pain in the body, there is a blockage in this flow of Qi. Through acupuncture and Chinese Medicine we can stimulate energy, eliminate any disruptions of Qi, and restore balance to the body to achieve optimal health.
Acupuncture can be used to treat musculoskeletal issues, digestive disturbances, lowered immune system, anxiety, depression, and women’s health concerns including infertility, menstrual complaints, and menopause.
Homeopathy
An ancient technique of using minute amounts of natural substances to promote health by stimulating bodily energy. Homeopathic remedies can be obtained from plant, mineral, or animal sources, and can be used to treat both acute or chronic illness stemming from physical, mental or emotional roots.
Hydrotherapy
A simple but highly effective method of directing a healing flow of blood to injured or diseased areas of the body.
Hydrotherapy involves the application of water, generally alternating hot and cold, to stimulate circulation and promote healing. It can be used to support the immune system, reduce pain and promote the excretion of toxins.
Lifestyle Counselling
Naturopathic Doctors believe that when it comes to health, there is no separation between mind and body. An ailing mind will sooner or later manifest itself in psychosomatic illness.
Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture
The insertion of fine acupuncture needles into selected facial and body points in order to tighten, tone, and encourage firming of the skin by stimulating natural collagen production. It increases Qi (energy) and circulation throughout the body while diminishing fine lines and wrinkles.
Bowen Technique
Unlike an over-all body massage, Bowen Therapy tends to be highly focused on specific muscles, nerves and tendons related to particular disorders that can be anything from migraine to tennis elbow. The treatment is gentle and relaxing, suitable for patients from infancy to old age. Conditions that respond to Bowen Therapy include:
- Musculo-skeletal
- Sciatica, scoliosis, fibromyalgia, joint restriction, arthritis, sports injuries, gait disorders, chronic pain, frozen shoulder, repetitive strain injuries.
- Respiratory Problems
- Asthma, bronchitis, sinusitis, allergies, hay fever.
- Digestive and Bowel Disorders
- Colic, crohn’s disease, indigestion, constipation.
- Gynecological
- Mastitis, premenstrual syndrome, infertility.
- Other
- Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, tinnitus, ear infections, bedwetting, prostatic problems, headaches.
IV Vitamin Therapy
When a drug or nutrient is injected directly into the bloodstream, the digestive system is by-passed, allowing the medication to flow directly into the cells. For patients with particular conditions, intravenous delivery of essential vitamins and trace minerals can be highly effective.
I call this MVTM (multi-vitamin, trace-mineral) therapy and administer it normally as a course of treatments, the frequency varying with the needs of the patient. It is especially beneficial for people in a run-down condition, whose immune system may be weakened, lowering their resistance to disease and infection. The formula may vary with the individual but generally includes: Multi Trace Minerals; Magnesium; Calcium; Vitamins B5, B6, B12 & B complex; and Vitamin C.
Combined in a sterile water solution, MVTM is delivered either manually, over a period of 15 – 20 minutes, or by drip-feed, which delivers larger doses, requiring 45 – 75 minutes. I have a special room for these treatments, where the patient is able to lie back in comfort.
IV Therapy can aid in the treatment of:
- Cold / Flu
- Migraines
- Chronic fatigue syndrome
- Fibromyalgia
- Gastrointestinal Disorders
- Acute muscle spasm
- Upper respiratory tract infections
- Chronic sinusitis
- Seasonal allergic rhinitis
- Cardiovascular disease
- Hormonal Imbalances
- Hives
- Weakened immune systems
- Acute and Chronic stress
And much more….including helping to boost energy levels and endurance in athletes, thus improving their performance.
Chelation Therapy
The purpose of chelation therapy is to improve circulation and remove heavy metals from the body. This is done through intravenous administration of a synthetic amino acid called EDTA (Ethylene Diamine Tetraacetic Acid), which binds to and removes calcium, iron, lead, mercury and other transitional metals from tissues. Through chelation therapy it is possible to remove significant amounts of calcium from atherosclerotic plaques, thus improving the flexibility of blood vessels and widening the arterial openings.
Prevention and treatment of heart disease under conventional western medicine follows a range of options from lowering cholesterol levels to coronary artery bypass surgery, an expensive and invasive procedure. Did you know that simple lifestyle changes, such as altering your diet, taking nutritional supplements and herbs, and exercising can help prevent heart attacks and strokes? An effective parallel treatment to improve the function of the circulatory system and heart is chelation therapy.
Recognized as a medical speciality that requires training and board-certification for Naturopathic Physicians or Medical Doctors, chelation therapy involves the intravenous administration of an amino acid that can be highly effective in combatting heart disease. Prior to treatment a comprehensive assessment of the patient should be done, including health history, physical examination and laboratory investigation. Chelation may be administered comfortably and safely as often as every other day, or three times per week. Patients with advanced disease usually require 30 treatments over a period of several months. Many patients notice a difference in their well-being as early as halfway through the course of treatment.
DMPS (2,3 Dimercapto-1-propanesulfonic acid) and DMSA (Dimercaptosuccinic acid), two other chelators, are specific for removing mercury from the body. These are administered intravenously or orally, every 2-3 weeks, over a period of several months or longer depending on the level of heavy metals in the body. Certain minerals and supplements are given alongside the treatment in order to replenish any nutrients lost, as well as to aid in detoxification.
If you have further questions about chelation therapy and whether it’s right for you, we would be pleased to discuss it with you.
Prolotherapy
Prolotherapy is a recognized orthopedic procedure that stimulates the body’s natural healing processes to strengthen joints weakened by traumatic or over-use injury. Joints can become painful when ligaments or tendons are stretched, torn, or fragmented. Traditional approaches with surgery and anti-inflammatory drugs often fail to stabilize the joint and pain relief is often not permanent. Drugs and/or surgery can often be associated with unwanted side effects. Prolotherapy, with its unique ability to directly address the cause of the instability, can repair the weakened site(s) and produce new fibrous tissues, resulting in permanent stabilization of the joint. In addition to helping to heal and repair damaged joints, prolotherapy can also be used to treat varicose veins, spider veins, haemorrhoids, and other vascular abnormalities.
How does it work?
A precise injection of a mild irritant solution directly on the site of the torn or stretched ligament or tendon creates a mild inflammatory response that stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms to lay down new tissue on the weakened area, resulting in a tightening of the structure. Additional treatments repeat this process, allowing a gradual build-up of tissue to restore the original strength to the joint.
What conditions can it treat?
This form of therapy can be used to treat dislocation of the joints; knee, shoulder, hip, elbow, neck and back pain, Temporal Mandibular Joint dysfunction, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and disc problems at any level of the spine. The therapy affects only the area treated and does not cause any problems in other areas of the body. Spider veins, abnormal or bulging veins and other similar conditions can be treated on the legs, feet, hands, arms, breast, face, and most other areas.
Skeletal Alignment
Bones are the framework on which every bodily system from nerves to muscles ultimately depends. Poor alignment can be the hidden cause of headaches, bad circulation, and many other ailments.
