The Principles

principles

1. First do no harm – primum non nocere

As a naturopathic doctor I am committed to methods and medicines that minimize the risk of harmful side effects, seeking always to employ the least force necessary to diagnose and treat.

2. Identify and treat the cause – tolle causam

As a naturopathic doctor I will seek to identify and to remove the underlying causes of illness, rather than merely eliminating or suppressing  symptoms.

3. Doctor as teacher – docere

I believe in sharing  information and knowledge with my patients, encouraging them to assume personal responsibility for their health and to have faith in their own innate capacity for wellness.

4. Treat the whole person – totaliter sanare

I will treat each and every one of my patients as individuals, whose physical, mental, emotional and genetic makeup is utterly unique.

5. Emphasize prevention – primum munire

My first responsibility as a naturopathic physician is to promote health ahead of treating disease. My function is advisory, working in partnership with patients to identify risk factors in their lives and to help them respond in ways that will prevent illness – before, not after, symptoms appear.

6. Support the healing power of the body – vis medicatrix naturae

As a naturopathic physician, I recognize that every human person is inherently blessed with an intelligent and ordered gift for self-healing. My function is to identify and remove obstacles to this process. I can diagnose and advise; only the patient can prevent and cure.
